Supper at Emmaus (Brera)
Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, 1606
Oil on canvas, 141 × 175 cm
Pinacoteca di Brera, Milan
Room V · Flight and Naples (1606–1607)
The same episode as the London Supper, five years later: the gestures are restrained, the colours subdued, and darkness closes around the figures. Caravaggio painted it in 1606 while hiding on the Colonna estates, after the killing that forced him to flee Rome.
