Supper at Emmaus
Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, 1601
Oil on canvas, 141 × 196.2 cm
National Gallery, London
Room III · The Great Commissions (1600–1604)
Two disciples recognise the risen Christ as he blesses the bread: one flings his arms wide, the other is about to spring from his chair. The basket of fruit teetering on the table's edge seems about to fall towards us. It was painted for Ciriaco Mattei.
